Argentinians would not be surprised to see Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio seated on a bus in his way to work.

They'd talk with him about church affairs, or perhaps ask for a blessing.

Now known as Pope Francis, Bergoglio is known for his common touch in Buenos Aires, and his insistence on holding firm to his beliefs, even it meant tangling with the powerful leftists who have run Argentina for years.

"He is a real voice for the voiceless and vulnerable," said Kim Daniels, director of Catholic Voices USA, a pro-church group.

"That is the message."

Bergoglio was born in 1936 to Italian immigrant parents in Buenos Aires, and it was not until he was in his early 30s that he was ordained in the Jesuit order.
